Mary and her husband Jim moved from Scotland to the United States in 1970. Jim's job took them first to New Jersey, then Richmond and Olympia, Washington, and finally to Winchester. Committed to obtaining a quality education for their children, they enrolled their youngest, Steven, in the 3rd grade at the School of the Good Shepherd. Steven went on to graduate with a class of 21 other students, 19 of which were boys. These students went on to excel in middle school, high school, and college.
Mary began working for Good Shepherd in 1981 and has been the Preschool Director for 21 of the past 23 years. During that time she has had the opportunity to shape the lives of over a thousand preschoolers in their formative years. Three years ago the Franklin County school board began promoting public preschool within the county. This has given more children the opportunity to begin their learning and socialization at a younger age; a plus for all Mary believes. The benefits of a quality preschool program are evident in the continued success of the students as they move on to elementary school. Mary's own grandchild, Addison, attended preschool at Good Shepherd and is now excelling in her studies in grade school, another Good Shepherd preschool success story!
Mary is sure that she has had the best job in the world. The unconditional love of the children has made every day worthwhile and it is a plus that she has had an opportunity to be a positive influence in their lives. What will retirement bring? Travel to Scotland to spend time with her nieces and nephews there, more time to spend with her grandchildren here in the United States, and certainly continuing involvement in projects to benefit all of us here in Franklin County.
Come to the reception for Mary Hannaway after mass on June 1, thank her for her years of service to the parish, and wish her well in her retirement!
